I spent close to 2 hours the other day trying to get an old laserjet working on a Dell computer running Windows The printer had been working on that system until the system ran into some sort of malfunction and we had to re-install the OS.

I have tried installing and removing every driver I can find from HP. At this point, Windows knows the printer is there, but when you right-click on it, the “printer properties” is not listed. I know this is an old printer, but hardware wise it is fine and it was previously working on this computer.

I have searched all kinds of HP forums and tried to follow the solutions they offer, but still no luck so far. Brand Representative for HP. Unplug the printer. Remove all instances of the printer including its software. As The Repairatrooper pointed out there could be a purge utility in driver’s unpacked folder.

I would then use these two tools to clean system. Run them repeatedly as admin. Do not use any USB hub for the printer. Disable in Windows 10 “Let Windows manage my default printer”. I have to do that on older printers and Windows I installed it, but I don’t think I did it first. But I have un and re-installed the printer driver 4 or 5 times since installing that USB driver.

I recently had an old printer I could never get to work with Windows Plug it into another port and system would see it, no flapping, but wouldn’t work beyond knowing what model printer it was. It’s possible the USB port on the printer was defective as it was hooked up via the parallel port before the computer was replaced. I just replaced it with a new one. What model computer is it? LaserValley Technologies is an IT service provider. Check the download for a utilities folder and there should be a purge utility.

Often with the older HP products you could not reinstall without purging first. Usually the utility is called scrub or scrubber. Truly sorry to hear this. Perhaps try choosing another USB slot and running a fresh install. I hope this advice finds you in good favor. Even to attempt a simple generic driver install, considering no HP drivers did the trick! Best of luck friend! Thanks for all the suggestions. I ran the cleanup utilities as suggested. Now when I go through the install utility, it sees the printer, but comes up with a “Driver unavailable” error.

In devices and printers, if I right-click and select troubleshoot, it goes back the original message about it not being compatible with a USB 3 port.

So basically, we have a vicious circle here. Finally got it to work by doing the manual add printer thing and choosing the DOT4 port and the HP universal driver. I had actually tried this before without any success, so I am not sure what was different this time around. This whole thing was a major PITA. It’s amazing what people will do do avoid buying new hardware. That printer is really slow. I have clients still running LaserJet 4 printers and they are only 8 pages per minute. I had a walkin customer wanting us to repair a 4L blistering 4 ppm.

I sent him away. This enables the print driver to bind with a DOT4 protocol. After that add the printer either automatically or manually. But make sure in both cases to use DOT4 port.
